Description
This chardonnay is possibly the most awarded wine in Queensland. With it’s win over 12000 wines in the Australia & New Zealand Winestate competition, as the first white wine to take out “Wine of the Year” or “Wine of Show” as well as best chardonnay varietal, it has been propelled into a swag of other awards, including best wine in QLD for 2017.  This current vintage is no exception with 96pts in 2023 Winestate and a finalist in the grand final.
Our 960-metre altitude vineyard on the northern Granite Belt significantly extends the ripening period of our Chardonnay grapes, allowing them to develop a spectrum of flavours and aromas whilst maintaining the tight line of acidity so important to the wine’s structure. Grapefruit, citrus and nectarine aromas fill the bouquet and are complexed by creamy and toasty French oak notes acquired by barrel fermentation. The palate, creamy and long with great persistence is driven by rich fruit and complex lees flavours, balanced by a lovely line of tight acidity. Expect this wine to develop beautifully over the next 5 years.
“The caveat will be that there is a lot of oak presence here, offering up flinty minerality, strong woody spices, a somewhat resinous tone that sits about tighter-wound peach, nectarine and pink grapefruit fruit characters. The texture shows a touch of power and concentration while leaning into the more chalky, flinty mineral aspects. Acidity is racy and briny, the finish a little stiff with oak but should mellow nicely with time. Indeed, a good decant or time in cellar will be this wine’s friend.
